Some vague thoughts - technology and innovation... a different perspective

Today technology and innovation - as may be assumed by many has reached palpable limits but in essence when you look at innovation - it is more or less constrained by two main points -

1. The business benefit factor to the innovation.
2. The current acceptability and 'live on' rate by the consumer - or in short consumer's perspective on the value that innovation generates.

Well to talk about it - the first 1st point always goes in favour of the business owning the innovation - ordained to the following thought -

'Why should I sell something to a consumer with a perceptible level of innovation involved in it when I can lure the consumer to adapt to something much less innovative but more fancy and pay more for it'.

That has pretty much been the selling point for all so called - 'innovation' these days - be it mobile phones, laptops, watches, etc..

The second point - about acceptability - consumer market is all about branding, so as long as you have a product from a company which holds the top most position in the world you have something which you can boast about, nonetheless - it's not about sustainability or the value the product generates but the vision of the value which comes in the offering of the product.

Today customers are open to buying a phone with a ton of memory, a fast processor on it and having a lot of fancy operations and willing to pay a handsome price for it when the usability factor on that phone is 1 or 2%. This is further lessened by the fact that the user is willing to buy another product launched 2 years or 1 year forward in time willing to pay the same or more price with the same usability factor.

In essence this becomes quick money for business - the same story continues with the other products - watches, fancy gadgets, etc.

Old times - it was the consumer who decided the value of the product and usability - take for example - a simple 'charger' - so many cables come today to charge the batteries. We started charging with each mobile/laptop unit coming with it's own type of charger. More than 20 years down the line and still we are just moved from individual charging units to wireless charging. There is nothing in the market which takes the advantage of smart charging or using a common port to simplify the process and design of charger - the charging eco-system hasn't grown much in time.

In today's word - we still have 5 different wires and ports for charging 5 electric gadgets which we use religiously every day. Each time anyone travels - they have to carry each of these plus there is no smart power delivery to the charge these appliances to understand which one to charge first and then second. That's outdated technology to me, a charging eco-system should be able to -

1) Support multiple devices - provide a common port to charge all the essential appliances of daily use.
2) Modify the delivery of power to the appliance in question by understanding the use factor and charging capacity - by just flipping the output to that appliance.
3) Provide for a charge store to keep the charge on the go.
4) Have a wireless solution to eliminate any wired components.
5) Evolve the charging algorithm based on the device added.

But to my mere dis-appointment - this is not even close all because we have learnt how to live with what we have in current times and carry on with it. There are many other examples in today's world - this was just one of them.

Although we are seeing shifts in the thinking of some companies like 'SpaceX' or maybe some small firms which are hopeful to get prime positions in markets in the future, but hope is all what we have right now.
